Anti-idle auxiliary power unit for mines and quarries lowers costs and carbon emissions
An anti-idle auxiliary power unit (APU) developed specifically for mobile mining equipment offers a fuel-saving solution for surface mines and quarries by powering critical cab systems without running the main engine.
The Booyco APU delivers cost savings and helps operations meet sustainability targets by eliminating unnecessary idling, which can waste up to 40 ℓ of diesel an hour.
On average, articulated dump trucks (ADTs) idle for around 30% of the time, which can amount to approximately 4.5 hours a day, assuming 18 hours of productivity in a day. During idling an ADT vehicle can burn between 30 ℓ and 50 ℓ of diesel an hour, to keep systems like the heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) running.
By providing an independent power source to drive the cab’s HVAC and essential electronics, the anti-idle APU allows operators to shut off the main engine entirely during idle periods.
Booyco Engineering executive director Grant Miller says the APU consumes as little as 1.5 ℓ of diesel an hour, noting: “It is a massive saving and when multiplied across a fleet the cost reduction becomes a gamechanger.”
The APU also helps mines meet sustainability targets, by reducing their carbon footprint to help meet environmental, social and governance goals. In addition, the South African Revenue Service offers rebates under Section 12L for every litre of diesel saved, giving mining and quarrying operators a further financial incentive to invest in the APU.
The APU is designed to integrate with Booyco Engineering 24 V air conditioning units and it also continues to power critical systems such as proximity detection systems and communication equipment, ensuring that operational safety is maintained even when the main engine is shut off.
